Oman’s green energy needs get a windy boost
The world’s energy mix is changing rapidly and so is of Oman’s. Wind energy is one of the most widely used renewable energy resources and Oman is focused on having a green economy. As a result, Rural Areas Electricity Company, Tanweer is implementing a number of renewable projects. One among them is the Dhofar Wind Project designed to ensure a minimum of 10% share of Oman’s energy needs from sustainable energy sources.
The Dhofar Wind Project is a first-of-its-kind wind project in Gulf spanning over 1900 hectares with the production capacity of over 50MW of clean energy. While utilizing $100mn in investments, the project fulfills the need of almost 16,000 homes. Moreover, the wind farm is now connected to the grid and has started producing its first power ever.
Renewable energy resources are the key for meeting the increasing energy demands of Oman. Moreover, the Dhofar project itself has mitigated 110,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year, giving a boost to Oman’s vision of a green economy.
The decision to invest in wind energy through the Dhofar project will definitely have a positive ripple effect in terms of clean energy to technological knowledge transfer, sustainable development, job creation, human resource and skill development.
