A school in Dubai leads the way in generating clean electricity

It is no brainer for governments to invest in green sources of energy for numerous reasons. Not only it reduces carbon footprints and abate carbon dioxide emissions but also help in offsetting electricity needs through renewable energy.

A case in point is The Indian Academy school in Dubai. Located at Dubai’s Al Qusais area, the school has aligned its objectives of becoming a more sustainable education institution in Dubai. The school partnered with CleanMax Solar, a rooftop developer under the Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy to install a 192 kW rooftop solar project in the school.

The 192 kW solar plant will generate about 307,000 kW-hour units of electricity every year and will help to cover 70 per cent of the school’s electricity requirement. Moreover, the amount of clean electricity which can be generated can abate 135 tons of carbon dioxide annually.

What is significant is that on the days when the solar power plant produces more electricity than what is required by the school, the excess electricity can be supplied back to Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s grid. This excess can then be used as credits against the school’s future electricity bills.

The principal of The Indian Academy was thrilled that their vision to go green has been translated into reality. The solar plant will not only benefit the school but also serve as an example to communities in general that gradual progression to environmental sustainability is the socially responsible way to go.
