Check out these LED basics - RR Lighting

Did you know that the world famous New Year’s Eve ball at Times Square is illuminated by more than 32, 000 LED lights? Though almost everyone knows LED lights are more energy-efficient than other types of traditional bulbs such as incandescent bulbs or CFL. However, in addition to this fact, there are many more interesting facts about LEDs. To know about them, keep reading:

Check out these LED basics:

  1. Working process: Have you ever wondered how LEDs work? LEDs work differently than the other traditional lighting sources. While incandescent lights use burning filament at the center of the bulb that burns out later, LEDs get their light from electrons that move within a semiconductor material.
  2. First known report of LED: Electroluminescence, the principle behind LEDs, was discovered in 1907 by Henry Joseph Round. However, it was only after 55 years, that the first practical LED (red) was developed. Green and yellow LEDs were introduced in the early 70s.
  3. LED brightness is measured in lumen: For LEDs, the brightness of light is measured in lumens, while the amount of power used by LEDs is measured in watts. When compared to incandescent or halogen bulbs, LEDs consume fewer watts to produce the same amount of light. A 60W incandescent produces 800 lumens, while LEDs produce 800 lumens but uses only about 9W.
  4. They are instant-on: LEDs lights are often described as instant-on. Which means you get the full brightness of an LED bulb, the moment you turn it on.
  5. 5Energy-efficient: Did you know that LEDs consume almost 25-80% less energy than incandescent bulbs? LEDs last up to 25,000 hours, while incandescent bulbs last only for 3,000 hours. They are much more energy-efficient than the other bulbs.
  6. Safer than incandescent bulbs: LEDs are cooler than incandescent lights. This reduces the risk of burnt fingers.
  7. LED lights are dimmable: With dimmable LED bulbs, you can set the right mood. However, not all LED bulbs are dimmable. When buying LED bulbs, make sure that they are compatible with a dimmer.
  8. LEDs do not get warm: LEDs generate a lot less heat than halogen and incandescent bulbs. LED bulbs use 90-95% of their energy supply to produce light, only the remaining 5-10% is used to produce heat.
  9. Wide range of colors: LEDs can be found in a wide range of colors, from warm to cold, and many are used for specialist uses.
