Light Trivia: Interesting facts on Georg Simon Ohm who discovered the famous Ohm's law
Do you know when you change the speed of the fan using a regulator you are actually using the famous Ohm’s law? While the famous Ohm law is fundamental to physics and is a part of the physics syllabus in schools, it went largely ignored during the lifetime of Georg Simon Ohm, the man behind the famous law. At the time of the publication of Ohm’s Law, his work was denounced by critics as "a web of naked fancies".
Let’s discuss some more interesting facts about Georg Simon Ohm:
- Georg Simon Ohm did not receive any formal science education: Regarded as one of the most important experimental physicists of all time, Ohm did not receive any high level of science education. Ohm’s father was a blacksmith who had been formally educated. He helped Ohm and his brother in studying mathematics, physics, chemistry, and philosophy. Because of his father’s construction to his education, Ohm was able to attend university.
- Ohm took various teaching jobs: Ohm took various teaching jobs after completing his graduation. During one of the job postings, it’s believed that he acquired or built an early electrochemical battery. Using this and his other inventions, he went on to make his groundbreaking work on the principles of electricity.
- Ohm’s famous law was earlier rejected: You would be surprised to learn that what is today regarded as one of the most important principles of physics was rejected. The famous Ohm's law was first published in 1827. But it didn't make the impact that Ohm had expected at the time it was first published.
- Recognition came to him much later: For many years, Ohm and his work remained largely ignored. But thanks to the PR work done by Charles Wheatstone, English physicist and inventor of many devices, Ohm was finally recognised for his accomplishments. In 1842, Ohm was made a member of the Royal Society. He also became a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
- He wrote a book on geometry: Not many people know that Ohm wrote a textbook on geometry. While working at his first teaching posting, Ohm was very unhappy with his job. He wrote an elementary textbook on geometry to keep himself engaged. He presented the manuscript of this book to King Wilhelm II of Prussia. The king was so impressed and he offered Ohm a position at the Jesuit Gymnasium in Cologne in 1817.
