But there are many scientific feats that Westinghouse achieved. Let’s discuss some other contributions and interesting facts about George Westinghouse:

  • He filed his first patent at the age of 19: Despite being a college dropout, he made his first invention -- the rotary steam engine --- when he was 19. At 21, he made many inventions and one of his notable inventions is a device that helped derailed railroad cars to come back onto the tracks.

  • His invention made railroad safer: One of the most notable contributions of Westinghouse was his compressed air brake system that he patented in 1869. The device functioned as a fail-proof way to stop trains. This invention replaced the manual braking method. It eventually became a standard of safety not only in the US but also in other countries.
  • He joined hands with Edison: In 1892, Edison’s company was merged with Westinghouse's company, making the Thomson-Houston Electric Company even bigger than its competitor General Electric.
