Light Switches: Interesting Facts

Well, let’s start with the basics. An electric circuit is a path for current to pass through, and a break in this path would stop the current flow. Switches break this path or control the flow of current. Do you know who invented the light switch or what are the different types of switches? To know the answer, keep reading:

  • Invention of electric switch: It is quite well-known that Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. But what about the electric switch? Well, the first light switch was invented by John Henry Holmes in 1884.  The quick break technology used by Holmes  is still found in almost every light switch.

Different types of switches: After the invention of the light switches, there were many who came with different designs. Some of the common switches are:

  • Toggle switches: Invented by William J. Newton in 1917, toggle light switches have a long lever that controls the flow of electric current from a power supply to an appliance or within an appliance. These are hinged switches which can assume either of two positions: ON or OFF.
  • Push-button switch:  While it is in the ‘on’ state, a metal spring inside the switch makes physical contact with two wires, letting the electricity flow. When it is off, the spring comes back to its original position and its contact with the wires ends, thus ceasing the current flow. It has a wide range of uses - from medical applications and commercial use to residential purposes.
  • Modern toggle switches:  A modern toggle switch  can be used to power two products simultaneously. This reduces the energy consumption. An old toggle light switch however can only be used for one product.
  • Rocker switches: They can be momentary  ( which means that it is only On (or off) when you are holding it) or maintained (when you turn it on it stays on till you turn it off). When you press one side of the rocker switch, the other side rises like a rocking horse or a seesaw.
