On a hot summer day, there is nothing like sitting under a ceiling fan and reading your favourite author whilst enjoying a chilled beverage! Even today, with air conditioning almost everywhere, the popularity of ceiling fans hasn’t waned and it continues to be one of the must-have home appliances.

Many of you may take ceiling fans for granted but before its invention, people used to fan themselves by hand. So, when did the first electric fan make its first appearance? Well, to know the answer to this question, we at RR Fans, a leading ceiling fan company, have rounded up a few interesting facts on the history of fans:

• The invention of the electric fan: While the history of ceiling fans powered by hand can be traced back to as early as the time of the Roman Empire, the electric ceiling fan was invented by Philip Diehl, a contemporary of Thomas Edison, in 1882. Interestingly, he used the electric motor that he used for the Singer sewing machine. He just didn’t stop there. He kept on improving his design.
• Two-blade fans: It would be interesting to know that first ceiling fans had only two blades. By the 1920s fans with four blades became popular as they could circulate more air and were quieter than two-blade fans.
• Fans with light fixtures: Modern ceiling fans with light fixtures can elevate the interiors of any office or home. Ceiling fans with recessed lighting have become quite popular these days. But not many of you may know that it was Philip Diehl who added a light fixture to the ceiling fan.
• Ceiling fans can be used in winters as well: You heard it right that ceiling fans can be used in winter too. In 1904, Diehl and Co. added a split-ball joint, allowing the fan to be redirected. By reversing the direction of the fan you can make it move the warm air around without creating a breeze in the room. In the winter, the ceiling fan can redistribute the warm air, making a room more comfortable.
