Tips to protect electrical cables against mechanical and environmental damage

Electrical cables are installed in different environments such as underground and overhead and it is necessary to ensure that they are adequately protected. As one of the leading cable suppliers, we share with you some useful tips to protect electrical cables from mechanical and environmental damage:

  • Braided sleeving: To protect the integrity of the electrical installation, it is important to ensure that the electrical cables have appropriate insulation. Braids sleeves offer protection from heat, abrasion and impact. Braided sleeves are available in different thicknesses, depending on industrial requirements. In industrial settings where plants and machinery are used, cables need high levels of mechanical impact resistance and abrasion resistance. Economical and simple to install, braided sleeves resist damage by protecting wires from sharp or rough edges.
  • PVC conduit: Cables that are placed under the ground are exposed to corrosive environments. PVC conduits offer suitable mechanical protection and chemical resistance. Cables are installed with PVC fittings in such a way that they are glued together. This makes the tubing watertight and ideal for corrosive environments and wet locations. Make sure that the PVC conduits that are installed outdoors are rated for exterior use.
  • Metal conduit: Cables are used in wet, dry and even oily locations and for heavy-duty protection, metal conduits are used. Metal conduits are galvanized to prevent corrosion. Available in flexible versions, metal conduits suitable for industrial and commercial applications, indoor or outdoor locations. They can also be used to protect cables installed near wet locations such as a swimming pool, spa, or an air conditioning unit.
  • PTFE conduits: PTF can protect cables against extreme conditions. Resistant to high temperatures and chemicals, PTFE conduits are excellent insulators that can be used in industrial applications.
  • Cable ducts: When cables are installed underground, they need to be often accommodated in small spaces in urban areas. This may pose potential risks. To protect underground cables during and after installation, cable ducts are used as they offer high resistance to aggressive substances. Cable conduits can be of plastic, metals or concrete and can be of different sizes to offer protection to different cables.

As cable protection is an important part of all electrical projects, consult your cable supplier to get the right information on the right cable accessories to ensure the safety of your electrical systems. When choosing cable accessories make sure that you select the one that meets your requirements and is appropriate as per the electrical code.
